To read or not to read?

Posted: June 4, 2014 in Uncategorized

When was the last time you read for pleasure? Maybe, like me, you love reading and every week brings a new adventure into another world. But not everyone has the kind of love affair with words as I do.

I have two sons and I’m beginning to think there might be a reading gene. One has inherited the bug, the other would rather stick pins in his eyes than pick up a book. Perhaps it’s an easy teenage rebellion for him. After all what could wind up your english teacher mum more than staging a reading strike?

It has occured to me though that reading for pleasure is dying out. I’ve heard so many negative comments about reading and, to be honest, I cannot understand why anyone would hate something as amazing as reading. So I want to encourage all of my students to give reading a chance. It is the number one way to raise your grades, but if that’s not a good enough reason, then do it for no other reason than enjoyment.

I’m going to let you into a secret. Sometimes reading IS boring. But the amazing thing is, if you find a book boring, you usually don’t have to finish it. You are in control. You can try something and if you don’t like it, ditch it!

To inspire you why not take up my reading bingo challenge (see Instagram mrsjgibbsenglish). Prizes for a line or a full house. Happy reading!
